Farmer Sue Wiegrefe & Prairie Plum Farm

Sue Wiegrefe owns Prairie Plum Farm in Canton, Minnesota.

She holds degrees in horticulture, floriculture, woody plants and public horticulture.  Before becoming a farmer, Sue has worked in Chicago and Phildelphia Arboritums and taught horticulture at University.  Sue works off the farm part time.

Sue’s farm was originally an Amish storefront.  She has 14.5  beautiful acres planted with  hazelnut, pear and apple trees.  Her science background  has led her to work on some very interesting grafting projects.

Sue first brought Baby Doll Southdown Sheep to the farm to help keep vegetation down in the orchard.   They are beautiful!  Sue has recently added some larger Finn Sheep and is doing some crossbreeding to add different colors and extra sheen to the wool.  The Baby Doll’s wear “jackets” much of the time to keep their wool from becoming discolored.

I love how Sue is experimenting with horiculture and animal husbandry.

This activity is made possible by the voters

of Minnesota through grants from MSAB

thanks to a legislative appropriation from

the arts & cultural heritage fund.
